Diffusion parameter changes in white matter induced by direct intracortical stimulation in rats

چکیده
Introduction: While existing MR techniques can reliably detect stimuli-induced activation in gray matter (GM), very little is known about the impact of the stimuli on connective white matter (WM) regions. A recent study has looked into this aspect using functional DTI (fDTI) and reported subtle increases in fractional anisotropy (FA) in specific WM pathways in response to motor or visual stimulation in human subjects. In the current study, we aimed to validate these findings with a direct cortical stimulation paradigm in rats. Our fDTI study based on this very effective stimulation paradigm enabled us to perform voxeland ROI-based analysis, which allowed specific assessment of changes in diffusion parameters (FA, mean diffusivity (MD) and T2 signal without diffusion weighting (S0)) in selective WM and GM regions. There are strong indications suggesting that diffusion related changes do take place in WM due to stimulation. There are also indications that the vascular origins of these changes cannot be neglected, as reported by other researchers.

[(18)F]Fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG) autoradiography was used to analyze the effects of intracortical electrostimulation on local cerebral metabolic rate for glucose (LCMRglu). The hindleg area in rat brains was electrically stimulated with different frequencies (0, 0.1, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, 1 stimulus trains per second, two animals per condition). The major result was a strong positive correlation betw...
متن کاملEvaluation of White Matter Tracts in Autistic Individuals: A Review of Diffusion Tensor Imaging Studies
Introduction: Many cognitive and social deficits in autism are caused by abnormal functional connections between brain networks, which are manifested by impaired integrity of white matter tracts. White matter tracts are like the "highways" of the brain, which allow fast and efficient communication in different areas of the brain. The purpose of this article is to review the results of autism st...

Introduction: Gestational diabetes induces developmental disorders in different parts of CNS and can change dimensions of the cerebrum, cerebellum and spinal cord. Different species of ginseng have been used for many years to control diabetes. This study investigated effect of extract of Panax ginseng on histomorphometric changes on cerebrum and cerebellum in 14 days offsprings rat from diabet...
متن کاملStereological Method for Assessing the Effect of Vitamin C Administration on the Reduction of Acrylamide-induced Neurotoxicity
Introduction: Acrylamide (ACR) consumption is increasing all over the world. There are some evidence on the literature about its neurotoxic effect on mature animals, but the effects of ACR on postnatal development have been less studied. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of ACR on development of cortical layer, white matter, and number of Purkinje cells of the cerebellum in ...

We investigated the functional consequences of compromised white matter integrity in Alzheimer's disease by combining Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) in 19 patients with AD (Alzheimer's disease) and 19 healthy controls. We used a region of interest approach and correlated the ipsilateral silent period (iSP) and the resting motor threshold (RMT) from TM...
